Dr. Ortner received his dental degree with high honors from University of the Pacific School of Dentistry in 1990. He practiced general dentistry until 1991, and went on to complete his postgraduate work in endodontics at Boston University, under the direction of chairman Dr. Herbert Schilder, developer and pioneer of vertical condensation of warm gutta percha. Dr. Ortner entered private practice limited to endodontics in 1993 in Salem, Massachusetts, and subsequently established his practice in Lake Oswego, Oregon in 1995.
Dr. Ortner's career has been distinguished by his commitment to dental education and innovative technology. As an adjunct clinical instructor at University of the Pacific School of Dentistry and a volunteer clinical instructor in postdoctoral endodontics at Boston University, he has taught numerous students, dentists, and endododontists on utilizing the Schilder technique of vertical condensation of warm gutta-percha, as well as microsurgical endodontics utilizing the surgical microscope.
What Others Have Said
Dr. Paul Ortner is one of the finest graduate students I ever had. His calm and gentle personality are matched by his keen intelligence and skill as an endodontist. I wish only that he has chosen to practice in Boston and teach at Boston University.

Dr. Paul Ortner is a highly respected graduate of the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry. He has managed to reach a milestone in his professional development by achieving the perfect blend of empathetic doctor, skilled clinician and questioning scientist. His sincerity and dedication to his patients and specialty is of the highest order.
Alan H. Gluskin, D.D.S.
Chairperson, Department of Endodontics
It has been a pleasure to observe Paul Ortner's evolvement through his dental career. Paul quickly surfaced at U.O.P. Dental school as a class leader. Throughout his dental education he won most of the highest honors, and pleased the endodontic faculty when he announced his interest in our Specialty. The director of his graduate program, Dr. Herbert Schilder, personally thanked me for encouraging Boston University, because Paul was one of his finest students. He will produce exemplary endodontics in the area he has chosen to practice and my only regret is that he chose not to practice with me.
